Alfonso Márquez, the Mexican umpire who is in the Championship Series

The man from Zacatecas was named team manager for the American League Championship Series between the New York Yankees and the Houston Astros.

The American League Championship Series between the New York Yankees and the Houston Astros began this Wednesday, with the Mexican Power present not only from the center of the diamond with José Urquidy.

It is also about the Mexican umpire, Alfonso Márquez, who received the appointment as head of the sextet that is dispensing justice in the games held at Minute Maid Park and Yankee Stadium.

With little more than 22 years of experience in the Major Leagues, Márquez was appointed to lead the team of ‘ampayitas’ that is made up of Vic Carapazza, Chris Conroy, Chris Guccione, Adrian Johnson, Mike Muchlinski and DJ Reyburn.

This is the sixth Championship Series (2003, 2008, 2013, 2016, 2017) where the 50-year-old from Zacatecas sees action, being scheduled to call balls and strikes in Game 3 of the compromise.

In 1999, Márquez became the first Mexican-born umpire to make it to Major League Baseball (MLB), but it wasn’t until February 2020 that he was promoted to crew chief, putting him in the history books as the second Hispanic to achieve it.

In addition to the Championship Series, Márquez has been present in 3 Wild Card Series, 11 Division Series, 4 World Series and 2 All-Star Games.
