[World Now] “Suddenly the ceiling rumbled” ‘Ring of Fire’ Taiwanese earthquake

Some of the students were even hit by collapsed ceilings.

A series of earthquakes occurred on the 18th local time in Taiwan, which belongs to the Pacific Rim earthquake zone called the ‘Ring of Fire’.

In the eastern part of Taiwan, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 occurred around 2:44 pm local time on the same day, causing damage one after another.

A three-story building with a convenience store on the first floor collapsed, the train station platform ceiling collapsed, and six trains derailed, and two bridges and a part of an elementary school building collapsed.

Also, at 5:39 pm on the same day, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake occurred in an area 80 km south-southwest of Hualien in eastern Taiwan, and a magnitude 6.4 earthquake occurred in Guanshan Town, Taitung County, at 9:41 pm the previous day.

The number of casualties caused by the earthquake is not accurately known.

Guo-Chang Chen, head of the Earthquake Prediction Center of the Meteorological Bureau, said that the earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 was the main earthquake of a series of recent earthquakes, and that the earthquake the previous day was a precursor earthquake that preceded the main earthquake.
