Training flight ends fatally: two pilots are killed after stunt planes get stuck together

Michael S. (42) and Dieter G. (72) died shortly after 6 p.m. on Saturday during a training flight. They performed a so-called “mirror flight” near the Gera-Leumnitz airport in Germany, with one aircraft flying inverted and parallel to the other. However, the aircraft, of the type “Zlin Z-526 AFS Akrobat”, collided with each other and became entangled. The pilots could not save themselves.

Dieter and Michael have been flying joint formations for 16 years and in 2019 even won the world title in the aerobatics for vintage cars. The loss is therefore heavy for the pilots of the Gera Aerobatic Team. “I’ve been traveling around the country with this squadron for 30 years, I know all the pilots. The bond has become so close that I now feel like someone has snatched a piece of my family,” said one of them.
