The ban was supported by 39 voters, two were against, and five abstained. The decision also prevents Russian and Belarusian sports officials from participating in international biathlon activities.

With an overwhelming majority of votes, the IBU also upheld the suspension of the national federations of Russia and Belarus until they fully demonstrate their support for the values ​​set forth in the IBU statutes. In this vote, the recommendation of the IBU Executive Committee was supported by 40 votes, one against, four abstentions and one invalid vote.

The IBU Executive Committee made a unanimous decision to immediately suspend the membership of the national federations of Russia and Belarus at the end of March, following the military invasion of Ukraine by Russia and supported by Belarus. Sanctions against the biathlon federations of Russia and Belarus were adopted for violating the humanitarian obligations stipulated in the IBU statutes.

The IBU decision also does not leave the possibility for Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete in international competitions as independent athletes.
