Serena Williams’ latest tournament helps US Open set attendance record

The US Open has set its new attendance record and Serena Williams’ final campaign certainly played a major part in that. This year, 776,120 people attended the US Open.

The previous record was set in 2019, when 737,872 people attended the last Grand Slam of the season. Going into this year’s US Open, it was pretty obvious that the tournament would have a huge crowd.

Three weeks before the US Open, Williams announced that the New York competition would be the last of her career. Williams’ three games alone drew over 80,000 spectators.

The US Open broke its single-game attendance record after Williams’ first-round match against Danka Kovinic drew 29,402 attendances. Two days later, a new record was set after 29,959 fans turned out to watch Williams win over second seed Anett Kontaveit.

In the third round – the match Williams lost to Ajla Tomljanovic – over 23,000 spectators were in attendance.

Williams thanked the US Open crowd

After losing to Tomljanovic in the third round, Williams acknowledged the great support she received throughout her last tournament.

“There were some really good times today. Not today, but this week was really great. So much support, so much love. It was really amazing and overwhelming.

And I feel like the whole audience really wanted to push me over the line. “I’m so grateful for that. I honestly think what I’ll remember the most is my level coming back.

I think I’m really grateful for that. It’s great to play at such a level, to improve in one way or another. I don’t know how this is still possible at my age.

I think it’s a very good memory that I will keep forever,” Williams said. Serena may not have won the US Open, but winning two matches is a great effort for the American. , who turns 41 this month.
