On the occasion of European Heritage Days, which take place on Saturday September 17 and Sunday September 18, 2022, the departmental museum of Vieux-la-Romaine, in Vieux (Calvados) goes back in time and organizes days dedicated to prehistory. European Prehistoric Shooting Championships

Vieux-la-Romaine hosts an assegai and prehistoric bow shooting competition. Secure observation posts will allow the public to watch the sporting events on Saturday, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Workshops

Many workshops are offered throughout the weekend such as an initiation to prehistoric shooting. It will be an introduction to prehistoric archery and spear shooting, in complete safety on Saturday and Sunday non-stop, in collaboration with the Falaise archery club. ​says Hélène Farcy, cultural mediator.

Using charcoal and ochres, budding artists of the 21st centurye century will also be able to reproduce the mythical paintings of the Chauvet and Lascaux caves during a cave painting workshop, Saturday and Sunday.

Other workshops on prehistoric music, lighting up in prehistoric times or a storytelling workshop are also on the program throughout the weekend.

Demonstration

A demonstration of flint cutting will show the different gestures and stages of the transformation of simple flint into tools, Saturday and Sunday. Visitors will also be able to discover an animation around the lighting of the fire and gestures of daily life. Around prehistoric tents, a reenactor from the Toubière 14 association will present all this, Saturday, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. “The mastery of fire is a turning point of capital importance in the history of humanity. Children, from 8 years old, can learn about archeology on a fake excavation. The goal is to help them discover how to learn to study Paleolithic objects.

Discovery of Vieux-la-Romaine

A guide will accompany visitors to the remains of the two ancient houses and to the excavation site of the forum for a discovery of the ancient city of Aregenua.
