Nick Kyrgios and his US Open dilemma – the script suddenly breaks off

Gray hoodie, baseball cap the wrong way round – Nick Kyrgios appeared casual as ever at the press conference following his elimination in the quarterfinals against Karen Khachanov.

But what the 27-year-old had to say was anything but casual.

“It’s devastating, heartbreaking. Not just for me, but for everyone who wanted me to win,” said Kyrgios. “I feel like shit and I have the feeling that I let so many people down.”

No question: The defeat against Khachanov hit the man from Down Under hard.

Kyrgios praises Khachanov: ‘A fighter’

Understandable, considering the starting position. Kyrgios has been in the best form of his career for months. No player has won more matches than the 27-year-old since the end of the French Open. In the final defeat in Wimbledon, he won the first set against Novak Djokovic and was very close to the big dream of his first Grand Slam title, at the US Open he now wanted to “go all the way”.

Tiebreak gala à la Kyrgios – then Khachanov can only marvel

That didn’t work because in the quarterfinals there was an opponent on the other side who did his job with focus and kept a constant level.

“Acknowledgments to Karen, he’s a fighter and the best server I’ve faced throughout the tournament. He just played well in the big points,” Kyrgios praised the 26-year-old.

Kyrgios: victory against Medvedev outshines everything

In the first four laps of Flushing Meadows, he was completely convincing and started an impressive run.

A clear success in one of his “most unpleasant matches” against buddy Thanasi Kokkinakis, mandatory wins against Benjamin Bonzi and JJ Wolf – and then the bang in the round of 16: Kyrgios took out defending champion Daniil Medvedev in five sets.

One of the best games that the world number 25. has ever shown on the Grand Slam stage.

The Kyrgios script suddenly breaks off

Tennis genius, fag maker, bad boy – and finally Grand Slam champion? no The Hollywood script broke off before the final chapter.

It’s a credit to Kyrgios that he didn’t make any physical excuses after the loss, instead emphasizing that he felt ‘physically great’ up until the fifth set. He was only mentally “destroyed” in the end.

Kyrgios served after quarter-finals: “I feel crappy”

It will probably be a while before the reigning Australian Open champion finds new motivation in doubles. “I think pretty much every other tournament of the year is a waste of time. In a Grand Slam you just compete. That’s how you stay in the memory,” explained Kyrgios.

Kyrgios: Only Grand Slam tournaments matter

Ultimately, people would only remember whether you won or lost at one of the four Grand Slam events.

Kyrgios goes crazy after the end – racquets have to believe in it

He could imagine playing in Tokyo in October, but: “These four tournaments are the only ones that will ever be important.” Now everything starts again from scratch and he has to “wait until the Australian Open”.

It is to be wished that Kyrgios uses this waiting time to remedy the last small deficits that still stand between him and the first Grand Slam title.
