The jokes were not lacking: the last opponent faced by Joe Mazzulla on the bench was the Mercyhurst Lakers (and Division II NCAA collegefaced in March 2019 at the helm of Fairmont State, his last position as head coach), the next will be the Filadelfia 76ers (against which the Boston Celtics will open their championship). The data is true and gives an idea of the scale of the challenge that the new interim coach of the Boston Celtics will have to face, called in the night to replace Ime Udoka, suspended for an entire season by the Celtics. It is therefore legitimate to ask who Joe Mazzulla is, and how he arrived on one of the most prestigious benches in the entire NBA. He was born in Johnston, in Rhode Islandfrom a family of sportsmen (his father, Don, has long coached the local high school and is in the Hall of Fame at Bryant University, a state private university). At the high school level, Joe asserts himself as one of the strongest players in Rhode Island historydriving his Hendricken High School to three consecutive government titles and being crowned best player for two years state high school (in 2004 and 2005). The college doors open for him, a West Virginiawhere he trains a legendary coach (also for his tenacity) like Bob Huggins. Just Huggins in 2009 chooses to suspend him following aaccused of violent behavior in a local bar but in 2010 Mazzulla and his friends Mountain climbers they come back as protagonists for other reasons. Eliminate John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins’ Kentucky to the elite eight of the NCAA tournament (17 points for him) e at the Final Four they face Duke, with Mazzulla in the quintet. His career in West Virginia ends after 145 games and here begins his adventure on the bench.

Modesta at first, first as an assistant in Division II al Glenville State College and then to Fairmont Statealso in West Virginia, where he becomes head coach after a brief interlude from assistant to the Maine Red Claws, the Celtics-controlled G League team. A budget of 43 wins and 17 losses in the 60 races trained at Fairmont State, however, they convince Brad Stevens to call him in 2019 to be part of his coaching staff in Boston, where it immediately stands out. To the point that this summer there is also his name among the pretenders to the bench of the Utah Jazzwho then goes to a Celtic, but to his colleague (and Udoka’s first assistant), Will Hardy. Mazzulla is however considered a rising name among young NBA coaches, and even if perhaps not even he could have hoped to find himself on the bench at the Celtics, Stevens (this time from the front office) renews his trust and entrusts him with the team. The field will do the rest.
