Nadal withdraws from Laver Cup due to impending fatherhood | NOW

Rafael Nadal will be out of action for Team Europe at the Laver Cup this weekend. The 36-year-old Spaniard is about to become a father and will miss the rest of the tournament.

On the night from Friday to Saturday, Nadal played doubles with Roger Federer at the O2 Arena in London. The duo lost to the Americans Frances Tiafoe and Jack Sock: 6-4, 6-7 (2) and 9-11.

The doubles marked Federer’s last match in his impressive career. The 41-year-old Swiss has won 20 Grand Slam titles and 103 ATP tournaments in his career.

Nadal will be replaced for the rest of the tournament by South African-born Briton Cameron Norrie, who will play against American Taylor Fritz around 3:30 PM on Saturday afternoon.

At 2 p.m. Matteo Berrettini will play on behalf of Team Europe against Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime. The Italian is the official replacement for Federer at the Laver Cup.

Team Europe and Team World are currently tied at 2-2. The fifth edition of the Laver Cup will last until Sunday. Team World has never won the tournament.
