Luka Doncic pulls out all the stops to bring down Germany

Luka Doncic’s wrist is fine! After a complicated game offensively against Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Mavericks point guard did more than settle the sights tonight against the Germans. Precious in hot moments, untenable in the last quarter, Luka Doncic delivered a demonstration to allow Slovenia to win 88-80 and take first place in Group B.

The Slovenians took a first ascendancy towards the end of the first act with the Dragic brothers in charge and Luka Doncic in throws to move to +7 after 10 minutes (14-21). Mike Tobey’s two 3-point baskets helped put Slovenia at +14 (17-31), until the German awakening signed Dennis Schröder, also 3-point twice (25-31). Luka Doncic then worked to maintain an 8-point gap at half-time, but Germany were still alive (36-44).

Unplayable at the end of the match

The threat became clearer when the Germans kept up the pressure on returning from the locker room with in particular the Schröder-Wagner-Thiemann trio to allow Germany to stay at -2 (55-57). The Slovenians then relied on two individual exploits from Luka Doncic to get back on track (55-61).

Goran Dragic took over at the start of the last act with two baskets to put Germany back at a good distance (59-67). Unstoppable, Luka Doncic then finished the job by lining up the baskets like pearls (71-82). The last two 3-pointers from Andreas Obst and Maodo Lo came a bit late, and Slovenia finally secured their victory, 88-80.

The “final” for first place in Group B will take place this Wednesday evening between France and Slovenia from 5:15 p.m. Germany will face Hungary at 8:30 p.m.
