Lorenzo explains James’ call and his arrival in Greece

Néstor Lorenzo delivered his first call as technical director of the Colombian National Team for friendlies against Guatemala in New Jersey and Mexico in Santa Clara, on September 24 and 27, respectively. The Argentine included James Rodríguez on the listone of the central themes of the press conference due to his prolonged inactivity and his recent change of club.

“If he is on the list, he is a player who is considered. James has given a lot to Colombian soccer and he has much more to give. I personally spoke with him and I noticed that he was very committed and eager to be there, to continue giving himself fully to the Colombian National Team. He convinced me and at the beginning of a process it is important to have that type of player with commitment, desire and what he has given to Colombia”, was Lorenzo’s first response after announcing those mentioned.

The coach sees him and other references summoned as important pieces for the process of new talents in the Tricolor: “I think he can give a lot to the National Team. It is not easy to consolidate a young player in the National Team, he needs confidence, results and time. There are players like James, Cuadrado, Falcao and Ospina who are natural leaders who can teach and guide in that process. It is important for young people that they are present on and off the field”.

After six months, the ’10’ reappeared at club level playing just over 20 minutes with Al Rayyan the week before in what was his farewell to Qatari football. However, for Lorenzo at this time, his lack of continuity takes a backseat, since he can contribute other things: “I don’t like to leave a case as a precedent. There are players who give more than anyone in 20 minutes. The Selection processes in which 23 players can be summoned give to summon those different players. At this beginning of the process, I consider it important that James be with us”.

His role in the idea of the game and the arrival in Greece

His position on the field: “I see him as a three-quarter court player, he is very precise there. We saw the last 10 games of James in the National Team and he was decisive in passes, crosses, scoring situations. He is a purely offensive court player. We will see how he plays, if he touches him”.

Olympiacos new player: “I’m happy about the change because I know he’s going to be happy. He gave up a lot of things to change clubs and play in more competitive football. Happy for him to compete at a good level. He is already recovered from his injury and is in good condition”.
