Iranian footballers in black jackets protest against violence | International football

Those protests arose after the death of Mahsa Amini. That 22-year-old woman died earlier this month after being arrested for violating the strict dress code.

Iran has been unsettled since the announcement of Amini’s death on September 16, resulting in at least 41 deaths. More than 1,200 people were arrested in the demonstrations.

One of the key players in Iran’s national team, Sardar Azmoun of German club Bayer Leverkusen, recently posted on Instagram expressing support for the demonstrators and women in Iran.

“I can be kicked out of the national team for this, but that’s just a small price I have to pay,” said the striker.

Azmoun of all people signed for the equalizer in the friendly against Senegal, after the African champions had taken the lead through an own goal.

Bayer Leverkusen, Azmoun’s employer, published a statement of support for the 27-year-old striker on Twitter. “Of course we support Sardar’s solidarity with the women of Iran,” said director Simon Rolfes.
