In New Zealand, finances for winter sports will be doubled, biathlon and sledding will also be supported / Article

The New Zealand government will allocate 20 million New Zealand dollars (12 million euros) to winter sports, which will provide an additional 700,000 euros to the country’s Snow Sports Association each year during the four-year Olympic cycle. Investments are also planned in winter sports infrastructure.

At the Beijing Winter Olympics, Zoia Sadovski-Sinota in snowboarding and Niko Porteus in freestyle won New Zealand’s first ever Olympic gold in winter sports.

The unprecedented success of the Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics shows the emergence of many young talents on the sporting horizon, so additional investment in high-performance winter sports will ensure athletes and para-athletes can compete at the highest level, New Zealand Sports Minister Grant Robertson said.

From 1994 to 2014, New Zealanders did not win a single medal in winter sports, but began their upswing in 2018 with two bronze medals in PyeongChang.
