Golf: Sergio Garcia risks a DP World Tour fine

Sergio Garcia faces a fine from the DP World Tour after his withdrawal from the European PGA Championship at Wentworth.

Garcia retired before the second round of the tournament after turning in a 76 in the first round and was later pictured during the college football game between Texas and Alabama on Saturday.

The DP World Tour manual states that “a player is not entitled to withdraw at the end of the first round or during the course of any round of a tournament” except for “emergency reasons or medical circumstances deemed reasonable by the Tournament Director”.

The DP World Tour confirmed to ESPN on Tuesday that Garcia did not provide a reason for leaving the tournament and could be subject to a fine under its general rules for members set out in their handbook.

The handbook adds that “written evidence of medical circumstances” must be submitted to the tournament director or registration department within 21 days of the player’s withdrawal and “a player failing to comply with these regulations will be fined”.

Garcia’s appearance at Wentworth was already a source of controversy, given that he was one of several high-profile players at the event who defected to join the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Series. saudi.
