Formula 1 | The Formula 1 World Championship will have six GPs with sprint races

The World Council of the International Automobile Federation approved that from 2023 there will be six Grand Prix of the Formula One World Championship in which sprint races will be held.

As reported by the organization, these sessions that were introduced in the 2021 season will be extended, which led to qualifying being moved to Friday and there being an additional 100-kilometer race on Saturday to set the grid for Sunday’s Grand Prix.

Silverstone, Monza e interlagos they hosted the first trio of sprint races in 2021 and for 2022 Imola, Red Bull Racing and Interlagos were selected.

Stefano Momenicali, President and CEO of Formula One, confirmed the approval of the six Grands Prix with sprint races, which “provides action across three days with all the drivers fighting for something from the start on Friday through to the main event on Sunday, adding more drama and excitement to the weekend”.

“Feedback from fans, teams, promoters and partners has been very positive and the format is adding a new dimension to Formula One, and we all want to ensure its future success,” he said.

The president of the FIA, the Emirati Mohammed Ben Sulayem, considered that this approval “is another example of the continued growth and prosperity at the highest level of motorsport“.

“The sprint sessions bring an exciting dynamic to the race weekend format and have proven popular over the last two seasons. I am confident that this positive trend will continue and I am pleased that the World Motor Sport Council on Tuesday gave its approval for these to be made to move forward,” he added.
