Football: Union Berlin remains top in Germany

Meanwhile, Union Berlin, who have been unbeaten in 14 league games, are still on cloud nine. Like last weekend in the 1-0 away win at 1. FC Köln, after a defeat in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday (0-1 at Sporting Braga), they immediately found their way back to success. Jordan Siebatcheu (54′) and Sheraldo Becker (77′) scored the goals for the “Iron”.

But another player was celebrated by the Berlin fans. Central defender Timo Baumgartl experienced a very special return just over four months after his testicular cancer became known. “That’s exactly what I dreamed of all the time during the chemo,” Baumgartl said after the game, visibly moved, “These are emotional moments for me.”

While the unbeaten Union Berlin (five wins, two draws) continues to laugh from the top, the Wolfsburg team slipped from substitute goalie Pavao Pervan and Patrick Wimmer, who was missing for private reasons, to a direct relegation zone after their fourth defeat of the season. “We played far too well,” criticized VfL coach Niko Kovac, “we were too harmless up front.”

Hoffenheim and Freiburg share points

At the end of the game day, Hoffenheim and Freiburg parted in a top duel with 0:0. Hoffenheim with Christoph Baumgartner (up to the 64th minute) pushed Bayern Munich, who have not won in four games and lost 1-0 at FC Augsburg on Saturday, from fourth place and thus from a CL place. Freiburg with Philipp Lienhart (played through) and Michael Gregoritsch (until the 85th) lost a place and is now third, three points behind Union Berlin and one behind Dortmund.

Bochum takes first point

VfL Bochum and Kevin Stöger were happy to win their first points. In the first game after parting ways with coach Thomas Reis, the bottom team drew 1-1 (1-0) at home against 1. FC Köln, but gave up a possible win in the closing stages. Heiko Butscher acted as interim coach on Sunday.

Cologne’s Benno Schmitz gave VfL the early lead with an own goal in the ninth minute. Linton Maina (88′) scored the late equalizer for Cologne. Despite the draw, Bochum, who started with six defeats, remain in 18th place. 1. FC Köln, where Florian Kainz and Dejan Ljubicic were substituted in the 74th minute, are in the middle of the table.
