Brought in at an exorbitant price, the duet of Koulibaly and Fofana actually resulted in a disaster for the Blues
Kalidou Koulibaly and Wesley Fofana were heavily criticized after being responsible for Chelsea’s defeat at the hands of Dinamo Zagreb in the European Champions League Group E opener on Tuesday (6/9) night.
The Blues actually opened the game on a positive note, even better than the home side with debutant striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang threatening several times.
But it all fell apart within 13 minutes when Koulibaly and Fofana blundered together to give Zagreb the opener.
What did Fofana & Koulibaly do?
Koulibaly, signed for £33m from Napoli this summer, failed miserably to anticipate Bruno Petkovic’s header on the halfway line. Through his header, Petkovic passed the ball to Mislav Orsic who had a sprint duel versus Fofana.
Despite his position ahead of Orsic, the £75m defender lost ground and was easily overtaken by him. Winger The Croatian raced towards goal without a hitch, and poked the ball beautifully past Kepa Arrizabalaga to put Zagreb 1-0 up.
