Denmark will play the World Cup with a protest shirt and Qatar responds

After the England team made it public that their captain during the Qatar World Cup will wear a bracelet with the colors of the rainbow flag, now it has been Denmark that has confirmed that it will also star in a vindictive act through the shirts that it will wear in the stadiums of the Qatar event.

An initiative that the organizing committee of the World Cup affirmed this Thursday that it is “trivializing” its efforts to improve the conditions of workers in the country.

The sports brand ‘Hummel’, technical sponsor of the Danish team, presented this Wednesday the kits that said team will wear in the next World Cup, marked by the critical message to the host country.

The Danish company unveiled the three uniforms that Denmark will wear at the World Cup, the first in its classic red color, a second in white, and the third in an unusual black color. All with a striking design whose objective is to protest the designation of Qatar as the venue.

“With the new Danish national team shirts we wanted to send a double message. They are not only inspired by the 1992 European Championship, paying tribute to the greatest success of Danish football, but also as a protest against Qatar and his record on human rights », explained ‘Hummel’ through his profile on the social network Instagram.

As a protest, the brand has blurred “every detail” of the shirt, including its logo and its “iconic chevrons”. “We don’t want to be visible during a tournament that has cost the lives of thousands of people. We support the Danish national team to the end, but that is not the same as supporting Qatar as the host country,” he added.

As for the choice of black for his alternative kit, he has done so because it is the color of “mourning”. “He is the perfect fit for Denmark’s third jersey for this year’s World Cup,” he stressed.

Qatar responds

Hours after learning of this Danish initiative, the Qatar Supreme Committee (QSC) responded bluntly: “We question ‘Hummel”s claim that this tournament has cost the lives of thousands of people. Furthermore, we wholeheartedly reject the trivialization of our commitment to protect the health and safety of the 30,000 workers who built the FIFA World Cup stadiums and other tournament projects.”

The organization of the great soccer event assures that Qatar “is committed” to the “journey” of “progress” and asked the Danish federation to transmit “accurately” all information regarding the organization of the World Cup.
