Daniil Medvedev reacts to losing his No 1 ranking

Daniil Medvedev admitted he was disappointed after failing to defend his US Open title despite losing the world No. 1 spot.

Last Sunday, Russian Medvedev was knocked out of the US Open by Australian Nick Kyrgios in their round of 16 encounter. The final score was 7-6 (11), 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

By losing at this stage, Medvedev is sure to lose his rank of No 1 in the world. He will give it up either to Rafael Nadal, Casper Ruud or Carlos Alcaraz, as of next Monday.

Since Nadal was beaten by Frances Tiafoe in the Round of 16, Ruud and Alcaraz now have a better chance of grabbing the ATP throne. “When you lose in Grand Slams, listen, I try to put on a good show here, but obviously I’m disappointed,” admitted Medvedev.

“I’m not going to go crying on the sly, but I’m a little disappointed. For a few days, I’m just going to be a little sad. Yeah, but that wasn’t the first thing that came to mind at the end of the match, to the point of saying to myself: ‘Damn, I will no longer be the world number 1′”, he explained.

Medvedev will drop in the rankings

“Actually, I don’t know where I will be (in the ATP rankings),” Medvedev added. “Probably No 3 or No 4. Guess Carlos will pass me. I don’t know actually.”

The Russian player also thought he should have served better against Kyrgios. The Australian, for his part, was clinical on his break points, and managed to convert his chances 5 out of 7.

“In general, I feel like if I look at the game as a whole, my comeback wasn’t that bad,” Daniil Medvedev said. “I should have served a little better, which is not always easy, and also played a little better from the baseline.

Again, it wasn’t easy and he played well. But coming back, I feel like it wasn’t a bad match for me,” he concluded. Medvedev is losing ground in the head-to-head against Nick Kyrgios, given that he now has a negative record of 1 win and 4 losses against the Australian.

This year he lost 2 times against Kyrgios. The first time was a few weeks ago at the Montreal Masters.
