Association denounces the destruction of “valuable arable land”.

bad homburg – The Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation (BUND) in the Hochtaunus district is surprised by the plans for a new commercial area in Bad Homburg. According to older regulations, these areas are intended for nature conservation. The BUND is therefore emphatically in favor of preserving the arable land on the Zeppelinfeld am Kronenhof and is therefore appealing to the city councilors to “decide in favor of champagne air and against the destruction of climatically and ecologically important agricultural areas”, according to the wording in a press release. The BUND district chair Cordula Jacubowsky emphasizes: “These are very fertile soils that are needed for the cultivation of regional food. Since these fields also produce yields in years of drought, they are an important part of sustainable food production in the Hochtaunuskreis district.” Jacubowsky also points out the local climatic effects for citizens in the event of possible development: “The building plans relate to a regional green space that serves as an area where cold air is produced and for fresh air supply for Bad Homburg has an important function for climate adaptation in the ongoing global warming.”

The sealing of further areas would also have an indirect effect on the water balance and would also exacerbate the housing shortage and water shortages in the region through the new commercial settlements. “Such a large commercial area of 18 hectares no longer corresponds to the current state of science,” emphasizes Jacubowsky. All in all, the magistrate’s proposal no longer seems adapted to today’s conditions: “It is supposed to be rounded off in a moderate, sustainable and climate-neutral manner. It is obviously forgotten that good, humus-rich arable soil in particular is a very good carbon dioxide store. Destruction of this high-quality arable land cannot be compensated for in a climate-neutral manner, so a climate-neutral or sustainable consolidation is in itself a contradiction in terms!” says Jacubowsky. judo
