CARACAS, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) — The Venezuelan basketball team lost this Thursday to its similar team from Argentina with a wide margin of 76 against 53, in a match corresponding to the quarterfinals of the FIBA Americup 2022 continental tournament.
Argentina was dominant from the first moments of the game, but Venezuela managed to contain, in the first quarter, the overwhelming offensive intention of their rivals. The first quarter ended with a partial advantage for the Argentines of 21 by 18 points.
A new Venezuelan team that sought to gain international experience in the tournament, dropped significantly in the second quarter of the game, a period in which they scored only 4 points against 23 goals from their opponents.
The half-time break arrived with a 22-point advantage in favor of Argentina in a match that, since then, seemed too difficult for the Caribbean.
Venezuela came out with a different defensive scheme for the third quarter and it seemed that it was giving them results in the first round, but Argentina responded with some tactical adjustments that allowed them to deepen the difference on the scoreboard.
The only period that Venezuela dominated was the fourth and last; however, it only served to reduce a little the wide advantage that his quite consolidated rival had on the court.
With the result, Argentina qualifies for the semifinals of the tournament and will face the favorite United States; while Venezuela closes its participation with a team that was characterized by summoning young people from their local tournament, who managed to win 2 of 3 games in the elimination phase.
