The City Council offers, among other activities, swimming, yoga, cardio, ‘Activate 70 plus’, for the elderly, and a climbing wall

The activities and courses of the Municipal Sports Board return, as well as the offer of the Sports Schools program. Specifically, 19,000 places will be offered, of which 9,000 are aimed at promoting sports and health. The remaining 10,000 are for school sports. They will have a cost of 2.3 million euros and the objective of promoting physical activity among the young and adult population.

“The main characteristic is that we are going back to the pre-pandemic, the ratios will be what they were before, which means a greater offer of places,” explained Ramón Tuero, Councilor for Physical Activity and Sport. He hopes that with the increase in places compared to the years of the pandemic, “those people who could not sign up due to lack of capacity can do so now.” He indicated that “it is time for people who lost the habit of doing some activity to recover it.” Among the programs are aquatic and swimming activities in Gijón’s six public swimming pools. They can enjoy them from two-year-olds to adults. Some are ‘healthy back’ and swimming pre and postpartum.

Physical maintenance is another program from the age of 15, from low intensity, such as yoga, pilates, tai chi; medium, like yoga and Zumba, or high, like cardio. The sports courses of tennis, paddle tennis, badminton and climbing wall also return. One of the star activities is ‘Activate 70 plus’, aimed at the elderly.

Approved the repair of the Moreda swimming pool and the renovation of the synthetic turf of the Montevil field

enrollment period

Registration dates are important. As of September 16, it opens for physical maintenance; from September 20, that of ‘Activate 70 plus’; from September 22 to 28, aquatic activities and swimming, and from September 23, sports courses.

Sports schools have 23 modalities, 16 that take place in schools and 7 in sports facilities. They will be open from October to July with an annual fee of 40 euros. “We hope to reach 5,500 enrollments in schools alone. We are talking about 3,500 school enrollments in activities such as climbing, canoeing and surfing. Swimming and golf will also be present, with 1,500 participants,” said Ramón Tuero.

On the other hand, the Governing Board of the Board of Trustees unanimously approved an agreement of 115,000 euros with Club Balonmano La Calzada; the repair of the pool cover in Moreda, for 124,000 euros, and the renovation of the synthetic turf of the Montevil field, with 150,000 euros.
