Ukrainian badminton players win 4 out of 5 “Yonex Latvia U17” trophies in Liepāja

Ukrainians did not win only in women’s singles, Lithuanian Vilta Paulauskaita, who won bronze medals at the European Youth Olympic Games in Slovakia this July, remained unbeaten in this discipline. On the other hand, Ivan Caregorodtsev was the only one who won more than one trophy, winning in men’s singles and doubles.

More than 100 young people from 8 countries – Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Belgium, Czech Republic and Ukraine – took part in the badminton tournament held in the arena of the Liepāja Olympic Center. Simultaneously with the European Badminton U17 ranking tournament, in which 66 participants participated, an international U13, U15, and U19 youth tournament was held, in which 75 participants participated.

The European U17 ranking badminton tournament “Yonex Latvia U17” was held in Latvia for the fourth year in a row. Initially, since 2019, the European U17 badminton ranking tournament was held in Sigulda, including also in 2020 and 2021, when tournaments were not held in many places around the world due to Covid-19 restrictions. In Liepāja, the European U17 ranking tournament was held for the first time, while in Sigulda, this year, from November 11 to 13, the World Junior Ranking Badminton Tournament “Yonex Latvia Junior” will be organized for the first time in Latvia.

Latvian players did not go further in the tournament held at home with the 1/4 finals, which were achieved by the men’s doubles pair Rolands Bratčikovs/Leonardo Golovchenko, as well as the girls’ doubles pair Anete Priedniece/Diāna Bespalova, as well as Anna Miesniece, who played a pair with Estonian Lumiki Lias.

Lithuanian players won not only gold in women’s singles, but also silver in women’s doubles (Vilte Paulauskaite/Monika Sukackaite), as well as a shared bronze medal in women’s doubles, as both Lithuanian and Ukrainian players (Polina Baranjuka/Jogaile Keleciute) were paired.

Estonian players won one silver medal in men’s singles (Marti Joost), as well as bronze medals in mixed doubles (Andrei Schmidt/ Heili Merisalu), bronze medals in men’s singles (Andrei Schmidt), bronze medals in women’s doubles (Heili Merisalu/Emilia Shapovalova) and both third places in men’s doubles (Marti Joost/Rasmus Roogsoo and Karl Aksel Männik/Siim Saarse).
