Tiesj Benoot hit by a car in Italy, season ended abruptly

After a collision during training in Livigno, the season of Tiesj Benoot (28) comes to an abrupt end. The exact circumstances of the accident are not fully known, but it was a serious blow. His season is probably over. That also means he has to miss the World Cup in Australia.

Normally, Benoot would have started the Bemer Cyclassics in Hamburg on August 21, and the Tour of Germany and the Canadian races in Québec and Montréal were also on his program. Almost the entire run-up that his Jumbo-Visma colleague Wout van Aert also takes to the World Cup in Wollongong, Australia. But Benoot, who also had an unfortunate crash in the Tour, again had to deal with a serious portion of bad luck on Monday.

No surgery required

The East Flemish rider was at a training camp in Livigno, Italy, to prepare for the autumn races. He was hit by a car. It was a heavy blow. Benoot escaped worse consequences. He is said to have neck pain, but his condition is under control and he sustained no permanent injuries. In principle, he will be transferred to Belgium soon. Nor is a surgical procedure necessary. At first glance, a few weeks of physiotherapy should suffice.

In the best case scenario, Benoot should be able to cycle again in the second part of September, but that seems too short a day to get in shape for one of the remaining races of 2022. The preparation for next year should normally be on schedule for Benoot. Startup.
