Latvian ice hockey champion Jelgava “Zemgale/LLU” finally officially signed a contract to play according to strength in Finland’s second ice hockey league “Mestis” last weekend.

There was no longer any doubt that there would be an agreement, but for various reasons the signatures on the documents were delayed, but an agreement has been reached that the Jelgava club “Mestis” will play three seasons in the championship.

In the first of them, 52 games are scheduled, 26 of them at home – in Jelgava. The league will consist of 14 teams that will play a four-round tournament, with the best teams then participating in the playoffs. The season starts on September 30 at home against “Peliitat” team.

Jelgavnieks will have paired matches, with one team two games in a row. In between, participation in the Latvian Championship and debut in the IIHF Continental Cup. “Zemgale/LLU” is preparing for the season in full swing, training camp in Madona in July, ice training from August.

About 40 hockey players are applying for a place in the main team, the sifting will begin when the head coach Artis Ābols returns home from the world junior championship in Canada.

The composition of “Zemgale/LLU” will be formed as the base club of the U-20 national team, but the team will also include players who have passed the age of juniors.
