Questionable toilet rule
Ruud delivers insane WC exchanges with the referee
Going to the toilet even if you don’t have to: Even the world number 7 Casper Ruud was surprised by this subtle rule at the tournament in Montreal.
Discussions between tennis pros and referees mostly revolve around Hawk-Eye or some rule sophistication. It is the same in the Montreal round of 16 between Casper Ruud and Roberto Bautista Agut (6: 7, 7: 6, 6: 4).
After losing the starting set, Ruud takes a toilet break. However, not to use the toilet, but to change. According to the ATP rule book, this is wrong, as umpire Fergus Murphy explains to the Norwegian. “You can change your clothes, but you also have to go to the toilet when you take a toilet break,” explains Murphy.
Ruud has little time for such curse-shit and so a funny exchange of words develops between the world number 7 and the referee – much to the entertainment of the audience (video above). The scene ends with Ruud being warned for unsportsmanlike conduct.
It doesn’t matter to the victorious Ruud: On Saturday evening he will play Hubert Hurkacz from Poland for a place in the final of the Masters 1000 tournament.
