  • Rafael Nadal is currently preparing for the US Open in New York.

  • Now he could miss the Grand Slam tournament.

  • His wife has to undergo an operation.

Only a few days left until the US Open starts in New York. Now, with Rafael Nadal, one of the absolute top favorites could miss the tournament. Reason for this: According to “Diario de Mallorca”, Nadal’s pregnant wife Xisca Perello had to be admitted to a private clinic in Palma de Mallorca on Monday.

Perello’s doctors are said to have advised the pregnant woman (31st week) to have an operation. What exactly the surgery is about and whether you have to worry about Nadal’s unborn child is not known at the moment. Majorca Daily Bulletin writes that Perello’s problem is just a “minor complication” and is nothing to worry about. The tennis superstar and his wife have yet to comment on the matter.

Is Nadal’s participation in the US Open on the brink?

Spanish media are already speculating that the 22-time Grand Slam winner could leave New York for his wife’s surgery and miss the fourth major tournament of the year in Flushing Meadows. Nadal is currently in New York, where he is on the list of participants in the Tennis Plays for Peace initiative, launched by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) to support Ukraine on its Independence Day.

Nadal has always kept a low profile about his private life. The news that he and his wife are becoming parents for the first time was confirmed in mid-June. The 36-year-old Mallorquin wrote on Instagram at the time: “If everything goes well, I’ll be a father.” At the time, the Spaniard emphasized that he did not expect the offspring to change his professional career. Now his wife’s pregnancy could at least ensure that he misses the US Open.
