Carlos Alcaraz is chasing the records of his idol Rafael Nadal. In one statistic he is already better than the 22-time Grand Slam winner.
Carlos Alcaraz (19) is currently unstoppable. The Spaniard is playing a fabulous season. The child prodigy has already won four titles in 2022, including the ATP 1000 tournaments in Madrid and Miami. As of this week, Alcaraz is also fourth in the world rankings, right behind compatriot Rafael Nadal (36).
In one statistic, the 19-year-old is already leaving his role model behind. The former tennis pro and current coach of Simona Halep (30), Patrick Mouratoglou (52), compared the numbers of return games on the tour. Alcaraz got the break in 51.8 percent of the games when he wins the first point. No other player will come close to this value in 2022. For comparison, the average on the ATP tour is 38.4 percent.
Successful under pressure
The same applies after the first two points won. In this case, Alcaraz can hardly take the break anymore. A total of 77.8 percent of the games go to the Spaniard. That’s a full five percent more than Nadal. The average on the tour is 59.4 percent.
Even in tricky situations, Alcaraz often manages to keep a cool head. When the score is 30:30, he manages to take the serve from his opponent 38 percent of the time. Alcaraz also surpasses Nadal in this statistic. (mab)
