Sport breathes tennis thanks to its girls

From its earliest days, Sport was strongly identified with tennis. In fact, for many years it was the only club in the city where this sport could be practiced. Not only was it an inescapable reference at the local level, but the organization of tournaments that over time became traditional made it transcend at the provincial and national levels.

On the clay of its courts they took their first tennis steps that stood out, even beyond the border of the country as in the case of Gabriela Mosca. But beyond the merits and sporting achievements, what characterized the Sport in terms of tennis was the social sense that it gave to its practice, with entire families enjoying its facilities and recreation.

The first Sport tennis courts were inaugurated on April 27, 1939 and there were three of them. It was a novelty for the time and since then a group of lovers of this sport began to be forged who, in addition to having fun, dedicated effort to the organization of tournaments and the growth of the discipline.

“The Sport Automobile Club is the only entity in San Francisco where official tennis is actively practiced. They serve as the basis for such activity, apart from the internal tournaments of the different categories, which due to the renewal of values observed in recent times are greatly gaining the interest of the fans, the exchange with similar entities and with which there is an affective relationship that is an example of what sport can do”, assured the magazine that the club published on the occasion of the seventh edition of the Championship of the East.

That was one of the first representative tournaments of the entity that lasted for many years, often revolutionizing the city with the arrival of players, family members and the general public.

Preserving that imprint and taking over, the ladies’ tournament was established closer in time, one of the most anticipated events by the club’s tennis family.

The contest has already been running for 31 editions, bringing together hundreds of women tennis players from all over the country. More than a sports competition, it became a meeting of peers who share the same passion.

Fernanda Oldrino is one of the members of the generation that took the post, honoring the heritage of women and men who in the past and with great effort maintained the tradition of holding this tournament, which is not only important for the club, but also brings movement to the city.

Dialoguing about the importance of preserving this amateur spirit but with a lot of responsibility, she assured that what guides the group of women who accompany her is passion.

Sport has a long history in relation to tennis, especially in the organization of tournaments that bring together athletes from all over the country. As part of the current generation, do you feel a responsibility to carry on that legacy?

Of course it is, it is as it is. This National Tournament is already an Imprint of Sport… every first weekend of August it becomes a tennis festival, with friends, reunions, anecdotes and lots of laughter. And we, as a “new generation”, feel the need to continue with this legacy, to get involved a little more each time. Because it is something that takes you away… that you enjoy… and in some way it is a way of thanking each and every one of the people who made each meeting unforgettable during these 31 years.

How do you prepare to return after the pandemic?

This year, after the pandemic period has passed, we are happy to be able to return to tennis with everything. That the Traditional Dinner Show returns, which is a registered trademark of our tournament and that all the participants like so much.

The Sport tennis group is a great family, those of us who play today, those who played yesterday and no longer, but continue to actively collaborate in the organization of each tournament. Our children, the grandchildren of those who no longer play, all enjoying the club, feeling it their own and therein lies the sense of belonging.

The club was a pioneer in the practice of sports in our city. For more than three decades its distinctive mark is the National Ladies Tournament.

A message of thanks

Fernanda wanted to leave a few words to recognize her peers: “Infinite thanks to the people who make it possible every year for our beloved Sports to receive hundreds of women from all cities in the country. Let’s go for many more beautiful shared moments. Let’s go for many tournaments plus”.

“We are a group of ‘beautiful crazy women’ who love tennis, who watch over our club and who, from our place, contribute our grain of sand so that this tournament, which characterizes us so much, continues to attract so many women, who even at this time , and with the economic situation in the country, they bet on coming to have a good time and have fun. It is a very important social event, for the club and for the city”, he assured.

Those “pretty crazy women” who accompany her are: Silvia Chiosso, Gabriela Culasso, Carolina Pavone, Laura Buffa, Agostina Cervetto, Daniela Delfabro and Florencia Pavone.
