The 40-year-old Williams, who has lost her place in the WTA ranking, beat the Spaniard Nuria Parrisas-Diaz (WTA No. 57) 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of the Toronto “WTA 1000” series tournament.

At the end of June, Williams returned to the court after a break of almost a year and lost in the first round of the Wimbledon Championships. Her last win to date came more than 14 months ago in the third round of the French Open last June.

Since winning the 2017 Australian Open, which was achieved while pregnant, Williams has 23 Grand Slam singles trophies, one behind Australian Margaret Court.
