Riga will host the European U-18 handball tournament in August / Article

Three equal EHF U-18 championship tournaments will be held in Latvia, Israel and Romania in August, while the U-18 European Championship for the 16 strongest teams is scheduled for August 4-14 in Montenegro. Romania replaced Ukraine as the host, which cannot host the tournament due to the Russian military invasion.

The Latvian national team led by Arnolds Straume and Ivars Lāčas will play in Group A against North Macedonia, Turkey and Kosovo in the tournament at the Olympic Sports Center, while Switzerland, Luxembourg and Belgium will be in Group B. The home team’s first game is scheduled for August 8 against Kosovo, on August 9 they have to face Turkey, and on August 11 their opponents will be North Macedonia.

Initially, Russian youths were also supposed to play in Riga after the draw, but after Russia’s elimination from the international handball circuit, three teams remained in Latvia in Group B of the tournament.

The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals, while the remaining teams will share the lowest places.

The general secretary of the LHF, Līga Bīriņa, is pleased with the opportunity to hold the EHF tournament in Latvia, and she also hopes for the opportunity for foreign guests to enjoy Riga and get to know a part of Latvia.
