With a 6 out of 9 and a smoothly running front guard, Genk could confidently descend to the Gaverbeek. Zulte Waregem did hit a club where, after a gray season, a positive wind was blowing again, after some promising performances.
But even before the match had even started, Essevee shot himself in the foot. Tambedou tapped Nemeth in the box, Visser was relentless and pointed to the spot after a VAR intervention. A breeze for Heynen.
Taste maker Trésor then took his team in tow and ushered in a Genk siege with a wonderful action. Bossut held Essevee straight a few times, but had to give in on the umpteenth attempt on a header by Nemeth, the replacement for the departed Dessers.
Zulte Waregem already seemed to be hanging in the ropes, but just before half-time, he hit his first opportunity: Vossen gave his team hope again from close by. A minute later, Heynen single-handedly crushed that hope with a great goal. An uppercut for the home side.
Genk didn’t need much more to kill the game and finished the job just after the break. Muñoz was too quick for his attacker on a corner and dived in the 1-4. Genk was then able to finish the game on low-power mode.
Both coaches took the opportunity to give some newcomers minutes, but they couldn’t change the result anymore. With a 9 out of 9, a frivolous Genk jumps next to Anderlecht to second place.
Captain Bryan Heynen, with two goals very important for his team, reacted enthusiastically after the match. “We came here to take points, if you can do that with a good game that’s even better.”
Heynen scored the important 1-3, a key moment in the match. “That goal came at the right time, just after Zulte Waregem’s 1-2. But the whole team did well. Nemeth also replaced Dessers excellently, he really weighed on the defense. Kudos to him.”
After the dramatic last season, Genk is now doing well at the top of the standings. “We started this season with feelings of revenge, after last season. Things are going well for the time being. The new coach has placed other accents, making it better. We all see that on the field.”
