NFL receiver Josh Gordon released by Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs have released wide receiver Josh Gordon, multiple outlets including NFL Network and ESPN reported on Tuesday.

Gordon bid farewell to the Chiefs and their fans on Twitter on Tuesday, appearing to confirm his departure.

“I appreciate everything the Chiefs Kingdom has done for me and my family over the past year. Thank you for the opportunity and the many memories,” he wrote before adding: “Excited to see where football will take me now.”

Gordon, 31, led the NFL with 1,646 yards in 2013 while playing for the Cleveland Browns. Since then, Gordon has been suspended by the NFL six times, five of which for some form of substance abuse.

Between 2014 and 2020, Gordon missed three full seasons while suspended. Besides the Chiefs and Browns, he also played for the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks.

His most recent suspension was in December 2019. He was reinstated in September 2021 and signed a contract with the Chiefs.

He played 12 games for the Chiefs last season, catching five passes for 32 yards and a touchdown. He was, however, scratched from the roster in all three of the Chiefs’ playoff games.

Josh Rosen did not convince the Browns

The Cleveland Browns have released reserve quarterback Josh Rosen, several media outlets say.

Selected 10e in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals, Rosen joined the Browns last July as the fourth quarterback behind Deshaun Watson, Jacoby Brissett and Josh Dobbs.

With Watson’s 11-game suspension taking effect Tuesday, Brissett is expected to be the Browns’ starting quarterback by the time the No. 1 returns. Dobbs is expected to be Brissett’s backup.

The Browns could put Rosen on the practice squad as the No. 3 quarterback, or find another candidate.

Rosen’s rights have also previously belonged to the Miami Dolphins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Sam Francisco 49ers and Atlanta Falcons since his NFL debut.

In 24 NFL games, including 16 as a starter, he completed 54% of his passes for 2,864 yards, 12 touchdowns and 21 interceptions.

From former top picks to crossroads

The Bills have released tight end OJ Howard. Howard, a former first-round pick, was trying to get in behind third-year Dawson Knox.

Howard was selected 19th overall in the 2017 draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After five seasons in Florida, the Bucs decided not to offer him a contract at the end of the last season.

In career, Howard has not lived up to expectations placed on him catching only 119 balls for 1,737 yards and 15 touchdowns in five seasons. Last year he was limited to a single touchdown and some 135 yards on 14 receptions.

For the Dolphins, another former first-round pick, running back Sony Michel, was released. Michel was trying to make his way to a third team in the NFL after starting his career with the New England Patriots. Last year he won the Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams.
