NFL: Bears claim first-round pick Alex Leatherwood on waivers

The Chicago Bears claimed 2021 Las Vegas Raiders first-round pick Alex Leatherwood after he was placed on waivers on Tuesday.

The offensive tackle was selected 17th overall in the NFL Draft after playing for the University of Alabama. Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler found Leatherwood had regressed upon arriving at training camp and made the decision to move on.

The American had run into trouble quickly last season, losing his role as right tackle in week five. Leatherwood soon had to fight for a place in the lineup, but was unable to get the better of teammates Brandon Parker, Thayer Munford and Jermaine Eluemunor.

His rookie contract will see him earn a salary of $14.39 million next season.
