MLB: summary of August 23 games in the National League

The Chicago Cubs snapped the St. Louis Cardinals’ winning streak to eight in Game 1 of a doubleheader on Tuesday with a 2-0 win. The Cardinals, however, got their revenge with a 13-3 win in Game 2.

In Game 1, the Cubs scored the game’s only two runs in the third inning. Nico Hoerner first allowed Christopher Morel to cross the plate by hitting a ground ball to second base. Then later in the inning, a single from Seiya Suzuki allowed the Cubs to increase their lead to two runs, which was enough to win against the leaders of the Central division of the National.

On the mound for the Cubs, starter Javier Assad took care of the Cardinals through the first four innings allowing just four hits. Chicago then relied on four different relievers to close the books.

Cardinals gunner Adam Wainwright squanders an opportunity to reach the 10-game mark this season. Instead, he suffered a ninth loss, after giving up five hits and two runs in six innings of work.

Then in the second meeting, the Cards placed five points on the board in the 4th inning, thanks in particular to circuits by Nolan Arenado and Tyler O’Neill.

Leading 7-3 in the 9th inning, St. Louis rode a six-run push to drop the Cubs and take a ten-run lead. Tommy Edman scored two runs, hit two hits and drove in two runs.

On the mound, the victory goes to the record of Jake Woodford, who allowed four hits and only one run in five and a third innings of work.

The Cubs and Cardinals are playing a five-game series, which ends Thursday. Chicago will next face the Brewers, before starting a series against the Blue Jays next week.
