You can’t ask for more from Ander Martínez de Rituerto. In his first international competition, the pole vaulter from Tolosa achieved a great fifth position in the U20 World Cup that is taking place in Cali (Colombia). And with a personal brand.

The jumper from Real Sociedad, after rising above 5.20 meters during qualifying, already flew in the final and exceeded the bar set at 5.25 metres, beating the Euskadi record for the category by two centimetres, which he himself he had since this year (5.23 in San Juan de Luz) and that he took from nothing more and nothing less than Montxu Miranda, current absolute Spanish record holder in the specialty (5.81).

Martínez de Rituerto’s final was to frame. The entire U20 World Championship, rather. Fifteen athletes competed with better personal marks than him. And a priori he was the second worst in the final, so his fifth place is fantastic.

Five times it has already jumped above 5.20. He fought for the medals, something practically unimaginable before arriving in Cali for Luis Aranzabal’s pupil. He started with doubts at 4.90, a bar that surpassed the second. In 5.05 and 5.15 he was able to the first and the second he also passed 5.25. He could not later with 5.35 (he tried twice) and 5.40 (once), although he was not far away. The podium was at 5.45 and the victory went to the Frenchman Anthony Ammirati with 5.75 meters.
