Liepiņš reaches 14th place in the European Road Cycling Championship / Article

The experienced Toms Skujiņš finished in 46th place, but Mārtiņš Pluto was not among the 80 fastest participants.

In the last quarter of the distance, there were practically no climbs on the streets of Munich, which provided the sprinters with the best chances in the fight for medals. Fabio Jakobsen was the fastest in the group finish sprint at a distance of 209.4 kilometers, securing the Dutch cycling’s first European championship title. Two years ago, Jakobsen suffered life-threatening injuries at the finish of the Polish cycling stage, but within less than a year he recovered and returned to competition.

Frenchman Arnaud Demar won the silver medal, while Belgian cyclist Tim Merlier became the bronze laureate.

Liepiņš finished in a group of 22 cyclists, at the head of which the fastest distributed the medals. 18 seconds separated Skujinus from the winner.

For women, Latvia will be represented by Dana Rožlapa and national champion Anastasija Karbonāri, both of whom will start in the group race on August 21. Rožlapa will also run the distance with a separate start on August 17, when the European champions in the race with a separate start will also be determined by men.
