José Pablo Gil is crowned Central American wheelchair tennis champion

Costa Rican para tennis player José Pablo Gil won the double crown of the Central American Wheelchair Tennis Championship, by winning the singles and doubles modalities.

Early this Sunday, Gil, who participated in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, beat fellow Costa Rican Steven Enríquez, with partials of 6-0 and 6-2, in a time of 1 hour and 30 minutes, achieving the three-time champion of the area, after obtaining the titles of 2017 and 2018 in El Salvador.

Later, José Pablo returned to the court to play the doubles with Steven Enríquez, against Salvadorans Valeria Valverde and Gilberto Pochet, winning the match with partials of 6-1 and 6-2, to leave both titles of the region in our country. .

“The truth is that I feel very happy, not so much for the results, which I consider very good, but my happiness is for achieving a Central American championship for the first time in our country. It is something incredible for this wheelchair tennis project, which began four years ago, “said Gil through a press release sent by the journalist Olman Mora.

“We have a large group of players in our country, who already compete at an international level and that causes us a lot of emotion. It is not easy to play tennis and even less sitting in a wheelchair. These days we feel the support of sponsors and public; that for me matters more than the two titles obtained in this tournament”, highlighted the para-athlete.

The Central American Wheelchair Tennis Championship was held for the first time in our country from August 4 to 7 on the courts of La Sabana with the participation of El Salvador, Guatemala and Costa Rica.

The Costa Rican national team was represented by nine field paratenists, including paraathlete Ernesto Lobito Fonseca.

Currently, José Pablo remains in 28th place in the world ranking and is fourth in the Americas ranking.
