José De Cauwer sounds the alarm: “We will still get Dumoulins” | cycling

The news that Tom Dumoulin will stop racing with immediate effect was not a big surprise for José De Cauwer. “I am very sorry for cycling, because we are losing a great talent,” says the cycling commentator in our podcast De Tribune.

Tom Dumoulin announced yesterday that he will retire 2 months earlier than expected.

“This is yet another wake-up call for many other athletes and especially for those around them to try to tackle mental problems faster. It has gone too far for Dumoulin and he has never come back.”

“That’s a shame for cycling, because we are losing a great talent. He was an intelligent and beautiful rider. The perfect poster for cycling.”

I can’t imagine being a cyclist now.

De Cauwer emphasizes that professional cyclists have to make a lot of sacrifices. “Cycling is one of the most difficult sports to combine with a family. Riders are away from home for weeks,” says De Cauwer.

“Riders also have to make so many sacrifices. I used to be a game bird myself. I can’t imagine being a cyclist now.”

“We will still get Dumoulins”, fears De Cauwer
