Italian tennis judge banned for match-fixing

LONDON (AP) — An Italian tennis judge was handed a seven-year, six-month ban Friday after admitting to match-fixing charges.

Lorenzo Chiurazzi, a national linesman and chair umpire, was also fined $50,000, of which $33,500 was forgiven—in a case investigated by the International Tennis Integrity Agency.

The crimes relate to matches at a tournament in Perugia, Italy, in 2021, according to the agency. They include Chiurazzi’s delay in entering the scoreboard into the scoring device, entering scores that did not reflect actual on-field scores, Chiurazzi’s refusal to cooperate with the corruption investigation, and his failure to report propositions from corrupt individuals.

The veto starts on August 12, 2022 —when the charges were filed— and runs until February 11, 2030. Chiurazzi will not be able to referee or attend any tennis event authorized or sanctioned by any governing body of the international tennis or national association.
