Conmebol and Concacaf Approve Roster Expansion for 2024 Copa América in the United States

It’s official: Conmebol and Concacaf approved the expansion of the national team rosters for the 2024 Copa América in the United States. Instead of being 23, each coaching staff will be able to name 26 players to represent their country in the competition that begins on June 20th.

Within the framework of the FIFA Congress in Bangkok, the South American Confederation voted in favor of expanding the rosters from 23 to 26 players for the continental competition. The only thing missing was the final approval from Concacaf (the United States, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama and Jamaica will participate), which has already arrived.

“Each team may register up to a maximum of 26 players on the list in good faith for the continental competition,” the Copa América organization already reported on its official site. Therefore, each country will have the same number of places that were used in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. In turn, UEFA also approved it for the Euro 2024 Championship in Germany.

On the other hand, the organization clarified that “the maximum number of members of the delegation on the substitute bench on match days will continue to be 23 members, including players and the technical staff of the delegation.”

How the expansion of the list benefits the Argentine National Team

This opens the door to several footballers who, a priori, could have missed the competition. In defense there would be seven players already confirmed, those who played in the World Cup, so Marcos Acuña does not have a guaranteed presence since he fights with Alejandro Garnacho. By expanding to 26 places, both could enter.

Meanwhile, the third place would be for Guido Rodríguez, who runs from behind due to the presence of Rodrigo De Paul, Alexis Mac Allister, Enzo Fernández, Exequiel Palacios, Leandro Paredes and Giovani Lo Celso, who had not gone to the World Cup due to an injury.

Brazil, the first to deliver the final list for the Copa América 2024

Brazil has already confirmed its list for the 2024 Copa América: Dorival Júnior announced the roster of 23 players, with Endrick and without Neymar. Now, when the extension is approved, three other players will be added to the squad.

For their part, other teams sent a broader preliminary list. Among them, Uruguay (Marcelo Bielsa reserved Edinson Cavani, Marcelo Saracchi and Nicolás Fonseca) and Venezuela (Fernando Batista included Miguel Navarro, defender of Talleres de Córdoba).
