The King Power Stadium held its breath, but ice rabbit Dante Vanzeir converted the penalty cold-blooded. “Normally Teddy Teuma was assigned. But Teddy had already scored”, smiled the Limburger.
“I had confidence and I took my responsibility. I didn’t think. I choose a corner beforehand and luckily the goalkeeper went to the other side. With Logan Bailly, our goalkeeper coach, I had talked a lot about a possible penalty kick in the run-up to the match. He advised me on how goalkeepers react.”
Vanzeir almost scored the 3-0. “Pfft. It was a long sprint of fifty meters and I didn’t quite get my steps. A third goal could have been even better. But I am so happy for my team and what we have achieved. This is incredible and a dream for Union. Next week we will defend this result tooth and nail.”(bdh)
Siebe Van Der Heyden proud of his team and Dante Vanzeir: “The perfect mentality shown”
What a great night of football for Union. Siebe Van Der Heyden also appeared in the mixed zone with a big smile. “We have shown the perfect mentality. With good football”, responded Van Der Heyden afterwards. “We knew that Rangers had played the Europa League final last season. We were not impressed. We knew what to do and we counted on each other, as the coach had asked us. We were focused on the field from the kick-off. The 1-0 was fantastic. Just like our supporters who made it a wonderful evening. At the penalty kick I had every confidence in Dante (Vanzeir, bdh). He was focused and I could tell from the way he took the ball that he wanted to kick. I am very happy for him and proud of the team”, said Van Der Heyden in a first reaction.
Whether 2-0 is enough? “I don’t know. In football anything is possible. We are not afraid of the return match. In Glasgow there will be 50,000 avid Scottish fans. We will have to play in block and concentrated. I will never forget this evening. The atmosphere was fantastic and our fans were behind us. It gave us wings and we executed our game plan perfectly and countered at the right times. It’s pretty funny. Actually, we still play like in first division B and this fairy tale continues. No shortage of highlights. Everyone is important to the team”, concluded Van Der Heyden.
