Formula 1: there will be no French Grand Prix in 2023

“History is not enough. Stefano Domenicali, the president of Formula 1, is clear. Faced with the flowering of new Grand Prix destinations, like Miami or Las Vegas, certain traditional Formula 1 circuits will not be on the menu for the new 2023 season. money that others bring. (…) These places will always be part of the discussions but their presence cannot be taken for granted”, justifies the Italian sports director.

First circuit impacted, the Grand Prix de France in the Var. First welcoming the growing interest, especially among young people, in Formula 1, Stefano Domenicali seemed clear about the projection of a 2023 season which will not pass through France. “There will be no Grand Prix in France in 2023”, he announced, specifying all the same that discussions were still in progress for the following years. However, the field has a French team (Alpine) and two French drivers (Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon).

The fate of other traditional GPs could also soon be sealed. With Belgium and Monaco, discussions on contract extensions are ongoing. The president of F1 is counting on a calendar of 24 races per season, against fifteen in the past. In terms of distribution, “we want to find the right balance, explains Stefano Domenicali. At least one third in Europe, one third in the Far East, and the other in America/Middle East. »

Eventually and faced with demand greater than supply, Stefano Domenicali evokes the possibility of setting up a rotation over several years to allow all the circuits to host an F1 race. The World Council scheduled for October 19 will formalize the 2023 Grand Prix calendar.
