Old-timers want to help Standard out of the crisis: Mbokani and Mpoku apply for return to Liège

With only four points after five league games, Standard has started the season very poorly. The fans of the Rouches are anything but satisfied and reinforcements are urgently needed. Remarkable: both Dieumerci Mbokani and Paul-José Mpoku are looking forward to a return to Liège. Both men have stated this in an interview.

36-year-old Mbokani is without a club after his departure from Kuwait FC and should therefore only negotiate his salary. It seemed unlikely that the Congolese would return to the Belgian fields after his adventure at Antwerp, but now that Standard is in crisis…

“I could have stayed, but my priority at 36 is to return to Europe,” Mbokani told Sudinfo. “I am open to all proposals, from Belgium or elsewhere. But I hope a solution is found soon. I know they’re looking for more offensive power on Sclessin, so why not? Standard remains one of the clubs that launched me and gave me unforgettable moments. I have not forgotten everything I owe to Standard. I don’t close any doors.”

Mbokani scored 50 goals in 120 appearances for Standard between 2007 and 2010, taking two titles. “Returning to Liège is something that probably fits. At my age, it might be the chance to end my career where it all started for me. And so in a way to complete the circle. So a return to Standard interests me.”

Mpoku was then again sidetracked at Konyaspor. The Turkish league is now three match days away, but the 30-year-old attacker was never in the selection. He therefore broke his contract (until 2023), to become a free player just like Mbokani. Meanwhile, Mpoku is back in the country, looking for a new challenge.

“I have had contacts with foreigners and prefer a place where my wife and son feel good,” it sounds in La Dernière Heure. “This could be in the Emirates or Qatar, for example, where the cities and schools are international. I also had contact with a Belgian club. My agent Stijn Francis has been contacted and talks have already taken place. Standard? Everyone knows my house is still near the stadium. My love for the club has not changed. If the current management thinks they need me… My door is always open. Then they know what to do.”
