Former NBA player could face up to 20 years in prison for pleading guilty in a basketball league scam operation

Terrence Williams, former NBA and NCAA player, pleaded guilty to conspiring to commit fraud and identity theft to get involved in a multi-million dollar NBA health plan scam.

Williams, 35, pleaded guilty in federal court in Manhattan. He is scheduled to be sentenced next January 2023. and could face a maximum sentence of up to 20 years for the conspiracy charge and must spend at least 2 years in prison for identity theft.

Williams was accused of being the head of the scheme operation for the robbery which consisted of fraudulent claims and documents being submitted to the NBA health plan for medical and dental reimbursement.

The former Boston Celtics player was charged along with 17 other former players who were charged during 2021. Investigations revealed that the group swindled at least $5 million between 2017 and 2021.

Damian Williams, prosecutor for the Southern District of New York, explained that Terrence was the leader of the operation that sought to attract other former players to be in the scam and thus present false documents to raise money.

Authorities detailed that Williams received at least $300,000 in bribes. and that he even posed as people to extort money and thus convince other ex-players to commit the scams to obtain more money.

The defendant had been free before trial, but was taken into custody earlier this year. In addition, the same authorities reported that he had threatened a witness so that he would not speak during the case.

One of the things the defendant will have to do is pay $2.5 million in restitution from the NBA health plan. and also $650,000 to the federal government for the framework that he made for almost 5 years.
