Football: Hymns of praise for Sabitzer in Bavaria

ÖFB team player Marcel Sabitzer has been under contract with German record champions FC Bayern Munich for a good year. The 28-year-old, who was signed by coach Julian Nagelsmann for around 15 million euros as a dream player, has rarely been in the starting XI. This could change now.

Sabitzer made a name for himself in Bayern’s pre-season, and his performances drew hymns of praise. Nagelsmann calls Sabitzer a “winner of the preparation”. “He’s always one of the best,” Joshua Kimmich is quoted as saying in “kicker”. There had recently been transfer speculation about Sabitzer after the first year in Munich did not go as hoped with just one goal and one assist.

“A couple of things went unlucky for him last season. But you could tell right from the start that he was hungry in training,” reported Bayern leading player Kimmich. The midfielder’s reserve status should now be a thing of the past, as Sabitzer played through in the 5-3 Supercup victory against his ex-club RB Leipzig.

“Smart Player”

For the season opener in the German Bundesliga on Friday in Frankfurt against Eintracht coached by Oliver Glasner, Sabitzer is a candidate for the starting XI because Leon Goretzka is likely to be absent for a longer period after knee surgery. “I like playing with him. He gives us a certain physical game, is an intelligent player, dangerous on goal, with a good shot on target,” Kimmich praised his teammates.

However, a compatriot of all people could thwart his plans: Should Bayern sign Konrad Laimer from Leipzig, Sabitzer should be up for sale.
