With six outstanding minutes, promoted Werder shocked BVB

Borussia Dortmund has to accept the first defeat of the season. BVB lost a two-goal lead against Werder Bremen, also because the promoted team turned up the heat towards the end of the game. Simon Terodde experienced a fiasco from the penalty spot with Schalke 04.

JUlian Brandt was deregistered from Borussia Dortmund and was considered a candidate for sale. On Saturday, after convincing training sessions, the 26-year-old got his chance in the starting XI for the first time this Bundesliga season – and he took it. In the 2: 3 (1: 0) against Werder Bremen, the national player scored the 1: 0 in added time in the first half after a single action on the edge of the penalty area. For a long time it looked like he would be the man of the day. But Bremen turned the game around in spectacular overtime.

Dortmund coach Edin Terzic had to do without injured attackers Karim Adeyemi and Donyell Malen. After his impressive brief appearance a week ago against SC Freiburg (3-1), 18-year-old striker Jamie Bynoe-Gittens also played alongside Brandt from the start. Many fans had problems traveling to the stadium. The main train station in Dortmund was closed due to a failed signal box. No trains have been able to enter the station since around 3:30 a.m.

First, the Bremen supporters saw how their team presented BVB with problems. But Brandt took advantage of Borussia’s first chance, the lead was flattering. Werder had more shots on goal, but didn’t use them.

Bremen was superior in the second half too – and Dortmund efficient: Raphaël Guerreiro made it 2-0 (77th). It was BVB’s second shot at the Bremen goal. The game seemed decided.

Oliver Burke, the third joker, scored to make it 3-2 (90+5). And made all Bremen fans and players cheer at the end of a special soccer afternoon in Dortmund.

VfL Wolfsburg – Schalke 04 0:0

VfL Wolfsburg and FC Schalke 04 still have to wait for their first win of the season. They drew 0-0 on matchday three.

The teams offered a weak first half, which only picked up speed in the 44th minute. Referee Felix Zwayer decided on a penalty kick for Schalke after video evidence – Micky van de Ven had fouled Simon Terodde. The man who was fouled started himself, but shot weakly, so that VfL goalkeeper Ron Casteels had no problem keeping the ball. However, since Casteels had moved too early to the corner on his left, the penalty had to be repeated. Terodde went in again, shot weakly again and also into the same corner – again Casteels parried.

After the break, Wolfsburg got better. However, VfL did not take advantage of its playful superiority.

Bayer Leverkusen – TSG Hoffenheim 0:3 (0:2)

The negative trend at Bayer Leverkusen continues. After losing the cup in Elversberg (3:4) and losing to Dortmund (0:1) and Augsburg (1:2), the Werkself also failed to win a point against 1899 Hoffenheim – 0:3 (0:2).

It took Nine minutes for Hoffenheim to take the lead: Christoph Baumgartner’s back-heel made it 1-0. In the 35th minute, Andrej Kramaric made it 2-0. Shortly thereafter, a goal by Hoffenheim’s Robert Skov was disallowed after video evidence – there had previously been a foul. After the break, Georginio Rutter scored to make it 3-0 (78th).

VfB Stuttgart – SC Freiburg 0: 1 (0: 1)

SC Freiburg won an away win in the Baden-Württemberg duel. Christian Streich’s team, who played his 400th competitive game as SC coach, won 1-0 (1-0) against VfB Stuttgart after an intense game.

The previously undefeated VfB initially came into play better and let the ball run appealingly. The Freiburg team scored the first goal with their first dangerous move ever: Vincenzo Grifo scored the 1-0 goal after a cross from Kiliann Sildillia (11th minute). Stuttgart coach Pellegrino Matarazzo had warned: “Freiburg is a very complete team with a good game idea.”

But Stuttgart showed morale, Freiburg goalkeeper Mark Flekken was only able to prevent the 1-1 with a brilliant save after a header from Konstantinos Mavropanos (35th). The visitors went into the break with a narrow lead.

In the second half, Freiburg was very secure in the style of a class team, while Stuttgart struggled offensively. It remained 1-0 for the guests, who were not only able to celebrate the win, but also the significant anniversary of their head coach.

FC Augsburg – Mainz 05 1: 2 (1: 1)

Nobody wanted to be satisfied with the draw, FC Augsburg and the guests from Mainz 05 brought fresh players at the end. Mainz actually managed to win at the last second: Jaesung Lee scored in added time to make it 2-1 (1-1).

Karim Onisiwo put the visitors ahead with a goal from 18 meters into the left corner (31st). Shortly thereafter, Augsburg’s Ermedin Demirovic equalized with a back-heel (35′). Aaron Martin missed a good chance for Mainz with a penalty. But then Lee managed the header into luck.
