Badminton stars PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth head to quarter-finals

India’s star commuters PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth had another easy outing as they stormed through to the quarter-finals of the women’s and men’s individual events respectively with comfortable victories at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Friday.

Sindhu, silver medalist in the 2018 edition, faced no resistance from Uganda’s Husina Kobugabe, winning 21-10 21-9 in her preliminary match of final.

Srikanth, who also finished second in Gold Coast, also didn’t sweat en route to a 21-9 21-12 win over Dumindu Abeywickrama of Sri Lanka in the men’s singles.

Earlier, the Indian women’s duo of Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly entered the last eight with a 21-2 21-4 victory over Jemimah Leung For Sang and Ganesha Mungrah of Mauritius.

Two-time Olympic medalist Sindhu will face Malaysia’s Goh Jin Wei in the next round for a spot in the semi-finals.

Sindhu had beaten Goh in two close matches in the final of the mixed team final and can ill afford to let his guard down against the 22-year-old Malaysian, winner of the gold at the World’s Championships juniors one 2015 one 2018.

Former world number one Srikanth will face England’s Toby Penty, who is ranked 54th in the world.

Gayatri and Treesa will then meet Jamaicans Tahlia Richardson and Katherine Wynter.
