Ter Stegen and Lewandowski’s Quest for Zamora and Pichichi Trophies: FC Barcelona’s Last Title Hopes

FC Barcelona has now been left without real title options. The League, the last one that could mathematically still aspire to, is already a chimera after the defeat in the Clásico against Real Madrid. The collective objectives are the prospect of strengthening second place and ensuring presence in the next Spanish Super Cup and that the continuity next season of Xavi Hernández on the bench, now official, has the support of a worthy end to the season at stake and results. Also on an individual basis, some challenges remain pending. They won’t be easy, but you can still fight for them: Marc André ter Stegen and Roberto Lewandowski, the winners of the Zamora and Pichichi Trophy last League, can revalidate that award if they apply themselves in the remaining six rounds to finish the league championship.

Ter Stegen

With 0.91, he needs to play everything

After nine seasons at Barça, Ter Stegen won the last League, 2022-23, the first Zamora of his career. He did so by conceding 18 goals in 38 games, although for Zamora they counted 37 because when he was substituted in the last match, against Celta, before the 60th minute, his coefficient was 0.48. In the number of goals he equaled the best Zamora in history, who were Francisco Liaño with Deportivo 1993-94 (18 goals) and Jan Oblak with Atlético 2015-16 (18 goals), although the coefficient of Liaño and Oblak was of 0.473). In the current season Ter Stegen was away from the playing fields between November and February due to a back injury. At the moment, he has played 22 League games and needs to participate in 28 to compete for Zamora, just six games remaining to say goodbye to the championship. With 22 games played and 20 goals conceded, his coefficient is 0.91, the second best in the tournament after Unai Simón, Athletic’s goalkeeper, with 0.90 after having conceded 28 goals in 31 starts.

Robert Lewandowski

He has 13 goals and would need a great finish

Although he needs a spectacular finish to the League in his marksmanship, Robert Lewandowski still aspires to win his second Pichichi in his second season playing in the League with Barça. He debuted in the 2022-23 Spanish championship, taking the top scorer trophy with 23 goals. Now, with six games left to finish the 2023-24 League, Barça’s Polish international has 13 goals, five behind the first in the ranking, the Ukrainian Artem Dovbyk, who has celebrated 18 goals for Girona. Certainly, Lewandowski’s challenge is more complex than the one posed to Ter Stegen with Zamora, but we must never rule out that the double European Golden Boot star will lead a streak that will lead him to achieving what would be the tenth trophy of best scorer counting the three national Leagues in which he has taken part, the Polish, the German and the Spanish. In the 2009-10 season, he scored 18 goals in games for Lech Poznan, in 2013-14 he scored 20 for Borussia Dortmund and in the Bundesliga in 2016. 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 he took the scepter that distinguishes the most accurate finisher with 30, 29, 22, 34, 41 and 35 points, respectively.
