A place for young people at the CJI

On this International Youth Day, the prefect of the MRC de Rimouski-Neigette, Francis St-Pierre, wanted to highlight the 1st year of the work of the Intermunicipal Youth Council (CJI).

“The first year of existence of the Conseil Jeunesse Intermunicipal (CJI) of the MRC de Rimouski-Neigette has confirmed that it is important for elected officials to have the opinion and receive recommendations from young people aged 15 to 30. years, who represent 16% of our population. The members of the Council are very happy with this participation and have agreed to increase the number of members from 10 to 12 young people for the next year. Moreover, the recruitment of 5 new people begins today until October 14th. »

Remember that the goal of the CJI is to create a channel of communication and exchange between elected officials and young people in order to obtain their opinion, allowing the development of projects that reach them, so that our territory becomes attractive, interesting and dynamic.

During this first year, the young people of the first cohort of the CJI played an important role since it was necessary to determine the bases and the operating methods of the CJI. To do this, the young people were able to benefit from 3 training sessions from the Citoyenneté Jeunesse organization and the support of the local and intermunicipal development advisor at the MRC, Mylène Doucet.

Priority to the environment

Already at the time of the consultations carried out in 2019 as part of the 13-30 Project, environmental protection emerged as an important issue for young people. As prescribed by the Environment Quality Act (EQA), the MRC de Rimouski-Neigette is currently revising its residual materials management plan (PGMR). Given this approach, it was proposed to the CJI to contribute to the “action plan” section of this document.

The young people then confirmed their desire to get involved in the revision of the Residual Materials Management Plan (PGMR) which will be made public this fall. At the end of their first year at the CJI, the young people formulated their comments and suggestions during a meeting with the council of the MRC, on July 6th.

In this first year of involvement, CJI members also participated in the first Outdoor Discovery Day, an event for 13-30 year olds. Over the next few weeks, the members of the CJI will also meet young people in various municipalities of the MRC of Rimouski-Neigette in order to make the CJI known, while encouraging other interested young people to apply.
